Tag-line What are you really worth?

Billy Beane, ex pro and General Manager of the Oakland A's, is tired of the unfairness in baseball and the gulf in wages between the teams.  At a scouting meeting to find fresh talent after the top teams had again pinched their best players, Beane decides to try something new - and with the help of Yale graduate Peter Brand they devise a mathematical formula to find a winning team -- on a fraction of the budget of the Yankees, in the hope that it will change the way the sport works.

So, how does it end?

Oakland's season falls apart and after a bad losing streak they end up bottom of the division. Art Howe refuses to use players out of position and there is a standoff until Beane, the GM, takes action and trades Pena, the starting first baser and rising star, and the younger Gambini brother, forcing Art's hand.  Suddenly the A's go on a winning streak - stretching to 20 games and beating the Yankees.  They top the division and make it to the play-offs - but lose the last game of the season.

Beane is offered a huge $12.5million contract to move to the Red Sox, and is told that he has changed the sport forever, where every team will be using his methods or risk falling behind.

Beane turns them down to stay with Oakland.  2 years later, the Red Sox win the World Series.

Upgrading the ratings on this one!  Watched it again, and a much bigger fan this time around.

It is a little slow, but hey, it's baseball.  They should have kept one of the deleted scene helps that shows Art (the manager) in a bad light, again, when he refuses to follow Beane's advice about a pitcher.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a great scene-stealer in this.
